This Speaker Series was designed to unlock the opportunities that abound by doing business in India and China and taking advantage of the free trade agreements associated with these markets. Selected speakers shared their in-depth insights, well-rounded knowledge and experience. Participants heard about challenges faced in each market, breaking down the myths associated with doing business and learned how these were turned into success.

'Engaging with developed Asia: Free Trade Agreements demystified' was the theme of the 8th annual Women in Global Business Speaker Series, which travelled across Australia over the last three weeks of October. Keynote speakers included Leonie Muldoon, Senior Trade Commissioner Japan; Wendy Haydon, Trade Commissioner, South Korea; and Julianne Merriman, Trade Commissioner, Japan, who spoke about the opportunities raised by JAEPA and KAFTA for Australian business women engaging with those markets.

Other keynote speakers included senior executive women leaders drawn from a cross section of industries with extensive experience of doing business in developed Asian markets.

Successful women exporters were showcased from each market as study speakers and a broad cross section of industries were represented. Each session was followed by an open panel discussion and a meet the speaker session.

Breaking into the Asian marketplace can be daunting. Keynote speakers included Julie-Anne Nichols, the Senior Trade Commissioner from Guangzhou, China and successful businesswomen from Asia and Australia who help you understand how different economies operate and what strategies work in international business.  Case study speakers, who are seasoned exporters in Asia were drawn from each State and Territory.

Women in Global Business 2012 Speaker Series showcases Growth Markets

The altHon Justine Elliot officially opened the 6th annual national WIGB Speaker Series in Brisbane on 25 July, by highlighting the opportunities that Growth Markets, the theme of 2012, present for women business owners.

Keynote speaker Amanda Hodges, Austrade Trade Commissioner Istanbul, and Dubai, explored the opportunities for business in the Middle East and Turkey.  Hodges confirmed that the Middle East is open for businesswomen.

The seminar that travelled across the country in the last two weeks of July highlighted exceptional women as local case study speakers drawn from diverse industry sectors, who shared their journeys to export in growth markets. International video postcards featured from Russia and Indonesia and there was ample time for networking.

In early November, WIGB and the New South Wales Government jointly hosted fifty-five delegates from
J-Win (Japanese Women's Innovative Network) in Sydney. Prior to their departure, Trade Commissioner, Fukuoka Japan, Wendy Holdenson briefed them in Tokyo on the advances that the Australian Government and corporates have made to boost gender diversity. Keynote speakers included The Hon. Maria Ficarra, NSW MLC, and Debra Hazelton, General Manager, Mizuho Corporate Bank. Corporate visits included Blake Dawson, Lion, Google and PwC.

Austalralia's DelegationThe lack of women’s full participation in the economy is a hindrance to economic growth and job creation. WIGB made the case at the APEC Leadership Forum on Women in Yokohama, Japan on March 8-9, that developing initiatives that enhanced women’s ability to network beyond borders and organisations was critical to achieving a change in institutional and individual mindsets, breaking down organisational obstacles and meeting work-life challenges. The APEC Leadership Forum on Women: Powerhouse for Economic Growth was the first APEC forum following the San Francisco Declaration at the inaugural APEC Women and the Economy Summit in September 2011. The next meeting is in St Petersburg, Russia in June 2012.  Read more

WIGB held its annual national Speaker Series from July 19-28 launching in Brisbane on 19 July. Ten days and seven seminars later, the Speaker Series concluded in Perth with a resounding 685 attendees, and increase of 14% on last year. Each event was a successful collaboration between the local State/Territory Government, WIGB, Austrade and the event partner Westpac.

Kelly Sims, Senior Investment Director at Austrade San Francisco spoke about business conditions and how women are driving the web in the USA. Wendy Holdenson, Consul-General and Trade Commissioner, Fukuoka, Japan provided insights on the business conditions in Japan following the tsunami. Each seminar showcased two exceptional local Australian businesswomen as case study speakers. They explored their own journeys in exporting and discussed the opportunities and challenges they and their businesses faced.

On 24 June Austrade held a highly successful Women in Export Trade Day as the lead-in event to the 12th APEC Women Leaders' Network (WLN) meeting hosted by the Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Education, Science and Training and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women's Issues, at Port Douglas from 25-27 June.
